Monday Miracle: Wisdom

Have you got good wisdom?

Sometimes the answer is yes, and other times the answer is no. Wisdom can be categorized in a multitude of ways according to a myriad of  situations. Is it wise to cross the street when cars are zooming through the intersection? Most likely not, unless you are being chased by a hungry tiger.  Is it wise to remain silent and forever hold your opinion? Maybe or maybe not depending on the “teachable moment.”

The age old questions probes, what is wisdom?

Wisdom is as wisdom does, possibly so. Some assert that wisdom begets truth. But, is truth always wise in all ways? Some posit that wisdom is gained through age and experience. However, can a baby be wise enough to know to stay away from a hot stove.  David Jordon, a scientist, asserts that “Wisdom is knowing what to do; virtue is doing it.” But, can mankind be wise in spite of virtue?

Aristotle says that wisdom is knowing yourself. Socrates says that true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.  Knowing nothing about yourself is unwise for it is in the knowing and the strength of experience that you gain wisdom. Success flows from the wisdom of experience, experimenting, and execution.  Therein, actual success in all dimensions is dependent upon wisdom.

Alexandre Dumas, another though leader, believed that wisdom requires you to wait and hope. Yes, the success minded should wait and drink deep from the fountain of hope but the canonizing of wisdom also predicates decisive action. Maybe wisdom mimics a walk in someone else’s shoes.

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”
Confucius

Wisdom may be bittersweet; it may too be the sweetest reward. Either way, with wisdom you get to choose the healthiest and most heart-centered way to internalize the wise learning you get from the experience.

Be wise, get wisdom.
